Spring is just around the corner and with that comes baseball and lacrosse seasons. Sports medicine experts have spent a tremendous amount of time and energy researching a condition called Commotion Cordis, otherwise known as “Concussion of the Heart.” This is explained in great detail in the Education pages of our web site and it is a condition that every young baseball and lacrosse player should be aware of so that proper safety measured can be addressed to decrease the chance of sudden cardiac arrest.
We have also posted an article from US Lacrosse on the What’s New page of the web site.

Hey, hey – a photo from someone other than Jack Carl!
Kevin Zeik (yes, the husband of our office manager Patty, who was profiled in the last newsletter) is shown here in Curacao on the Queen Emma Bridge. Kevin is proudly sporting the red, white and blue of America as he travels the world! Thanks for spreading the word about ESSMC around the globe!
As a special incentive, we will give an Atria’s gift card to the first five people who submit a photo sporting our brightly colored t-shirts and spreading the word of our good work in interesting places. Please send us a picture with a brief caption describing where you have been photographed and what you were doing at the time.

According to the discussion on Commotio Cordis prepared by Staff Athletic Trainer Jeremy Erkel, ATC, which of the following statements is NOT true?
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes.
- CPR is important, but the AED saves lives.
- Athletes need to be trained to wear chest protectors routinely.
- Sudden cardiac arrest is the result of a 90 mph fastball striking the chest.
The first 10 people with the correct answer will receive a $10 gift card to Panera Bread. Reply via email at news@essmc.com with the correct answer to receive your gift card. Include your name, address and of course the correct answer. Good luck!
