WELCOME!

This is a newly revised edition of the newsletter. We have tried to freshen up the format and provide some practical tips to assist everyone with their health / fitness quest. We are also starting something new where we spotlight a student-athlete who has overcome an injury and has returned to sport with our help. Lastly, we have imbedded a link to our web site video which provides a 60 second overview of the practice.

Best wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Watch the video here.

We welcome feedback on topics that you might have a special interest in, or any other question that you may have. Please email us at news@essmc.com and we will get right back to you. Enjoy this edition, and don’t forget the quiz.

Perfect Attendance Award

Congratulations to Chris Pursley from our Murrysville office who won the Perfect Attendance Award for the weeks surrounding the Thanksgiving Holiday. Throughout the entire practice we had over 195 patients qualify by scheduling and keeping ALL of their appointment the week before and the week of the holiday. Chris Pursley was randomly selected and won a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant of his choice.

SMILES FOR SUNNY 5K RACE

For the second straight year, ESSMC sponsored the Smiles for Sunny 5k race in Plum. Pictured below is John Bonaroti with Caitlin McClain, winner of the kid’s race and the ESSMC raffle for a Hamstretcher, as well as Chris Cooley, Race Director. The race is promoted by Running 4A Reason (www.running4areason.org) which is raising money for cancer research. 150 runners participated in the race and KDKA's Andy Sheehan was the guest MC. A great time was had by all despite the 35 degree weather at race time!

Important Insurance Reminders

We urge patients to be good advocates for their healthcare and to have a good understanding of the insurance plan provisions. One of the most significant points to remember is that you ALWAYS have a choice of providers for any service that you need. More often than we would like, we hear that patients are being directed away from our practice by physician groups owned by UPMC. Be aware of this and insist on choosing our practice especially if you have had a successful result in the past.

Be a good consumer and seek out what is best for you!

Co-Pay difficulties?

If you or someone you know is in need of our service, but is hesitating to schedule because of rising co-pays or other issues, please call the office and discuss the matter with our staff. We DO have options for you. Your conversation will be held in the strictest confidence.

The Lean Team is Going Strong

We have helped our group of participants lose over 450 pounds since January! The tie-in with physical therapy is tremendous – many conditions can be helped by losing 10-20 pounds – low back pain, hip and knee arthritis, foot / heel pain to name a few.

Join us for an informational meeting on Healthpointe
Monday, Janaury 4th, 2010 at 7pm
in our Murrysville office to be part of our wellness initiative.

We continue to promote fitness and wellness as an adjunct to the traditional physical therapy interventions that we have had success with.

Please pre-register by calling, 412-399-3499 or by emailing us at MNovic@comcast.net

PT Tip for Winter Fitness

Prevent back pain during the winter months:

As winter approaches, daylight fades and the temperature plummets.  Often this means that a lot of us aren’t getting outdoors and staying active.  Even as the snow begins to fall, it is important to stay active to aid in injury prevention and joint pain.

Try these easy tips during the winter months:

Try walking indoors to improve cardiovascular health and endurance.  Look for a local indoor track, use a treadmill, or walk around the mall during the holidays.

  • Walk for 15- 30 minutes depending on overall heath.
  • Build up endurance and speed over time.
  • Try going further each time before stopping to rest.
  • Try using a pedometer to track steps.

We encourage stretching before and after walks to aid in flexibility and muscle recovery.

-Hamstring Stretch:
Hold for 15-20 seconds and perform 5 times before and after walking.

Hamstring Stretch

-Calf Stretch
Hold for 15-20 seconds and perform 5 times before and after walking.

Calf Stretch

-Standing Quad Stretch
Hold for 15-20 seconds and perform 5 times before and after walking.

Which statement below is FALSE?

  1. Fitness walking is much more than a stroll or nature walk.
  2. Walk fast enough that your breathing is increased yet you are not out of breath.
  3. It is best to strap weights to your ankles and/or carry weights in your hands for a better workout.
  4. Focus on good posture while walking.

Panera gift cardThe first 10 people with the correct answer will receive a $10 gift card to Panera Bread. Reply via email at news@essmc.com with the correct answer to receive your gift card. Include your name, mailing address (so we don’t have to look it up!), and, of course, the correct answer.
Good luck!

Nico Cortese

Check this out…

Nico Cortese is a highly accomplished WPIAL wrestler who currently wrestles in the ACC at Duke University. He sustained a severe shoulder injury while weightlifting and it was ultimately determined that he had a labral tear which required surgery. He performed a major portion of his rehab at our Plum/286 office from April until August. We are proud to report that Nico has returned to the mat and he won his first match, under the watchful eye of his parents, this past weekend. Congratulations Nico!

Give us a brief history of your high school sports career and current college endeavors.

I played golf and wrestling for Greensburg Central Catholic and Hempfield Area High School.   I was the captain of my golf team senior year and helped lead my team to 3 section titles in my career.

I ended my high school wrestling career with a 157-16 record.  I took 2nd place at  Senior Nationals and earned Wrestling USA High School All-American honors.  I was a four-time PIAA place winner (2nd,3rd,5th,6th), and  I was named to the All-WPIAL Team and Pennsylvania All-Academic Team three times.  I was selected to represent the WPIAL in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic.

I am currently a sophomore at Duke University on a wrestling scholarship.  I am pre-med majoring in biological anatomy and anthropology.

My most memorable career moment is …

My most memorable career moment was my final match senior year at the PIAA state tournament.  I only lost two times my senior year and both were to my opponent I had in the consolation finals.  He beat me earlier in the quarterfinals of the tournament.  However, I managed to beat him 2-1 in 3OT to take 3rd place in states and end my high school career with a win.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

I would like to meet Tiger Woods.  Golf has always been my favorite sport and he is my favorite athlete.  I don’t even watch a tournament unless he is playing in it.  His dedication, focus, and determination are unbelievable.  He is so exciting to watch because he is so unpredictable and is able to pull off unimaginable shots.

What are your career aspirations for the future?

My lifelong goal is to get accepted to med school and become an orthopedic surgeon.  My dream job would be to work in affiliation with a sports medicine program so that I am able to give back to other athletes.

Tell us about your experience with Physical Therapy and how it helped you…

I have been doing physical therapy for my shoulder for over a year now.  It has helped me get back on the wrestling mat after my injury. Physical therapy takes a lot of hard work and dedication.  You’re constantly pushing yourself to the limit and striving to improve each week until you reach full recovery.   Physical therapy has always been an enjoyable experience in a friendly environment.  I got to know all the employees at ESSMC along with other patients very well which made me feel comfortable going.

People may be surprised to know that...

Golf is my favorite sport and I am a 6 handicap.  Growing up I wasn’t able to play as much as I would have liked because of wrestling.  However, now I spend just about every day in the summer on the golf course either working at Manor Valley Golf Course or playing with my dad.

My favorite thing about Christmas is…

On Christmas Eve, my family has a huge meal with all our relatives, some of which we see only once a year.  It’s my favorite meal of the year because we have lots of seafood.  I enjoy spending time with my family and appreciate the time more now as I get older and don’t get to see them as often.
