Call 724-744-1222 if you or someone you know needs in-home care. 9.20.2004 CONGRATULATIONS MIKE FRIEDMAN! East Suburban Sports Medicine/GPOA Cycling Team elite rider Mike Friedman showed his nationally ranked ability at the US National Track Championships in Texas in September. Mike, a bio/chemistry honor student at Penn State University, is nationally ranked 2nd in the nation in criterium races and one of the highest ranked U-23 (Under 23) riders in the United States as a track rider. Mike has his goals set for the 2008 Olympics in China and with results like this, he is getting a great start. At the US Nationals, Mike was on the podium 3 times and gained national attention as described in cycling's most read online daily news publication- Cyclingnews.com. Great job Mike and East Suburban Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy is proud to sponsor such a talented athlete from the Pittsburgh area! Healthy 4 Life Expo For the second year, we are sponsoring the Health and Fitness Expo at Penn Trafford High School on Saturday July 31st from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. The focus of our booth is on improving general fitness for children and adults through education. Fitness for LIfe packets made available by the American Physical Therapy Association will be handed out. John Bonaroti and Rick Jeletic will man the booth to field questions and to perform flexibility assessments. 6.8.2004 RIDER QUALIFIES FOR US NATIONAL ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP! Congratulations to Michael Friedman, a rider for the ESSMC Cycling Team, who has earned the right to compete in the US National Road Race Championship this summer. The winner is automatically on the US Olympic Cycling Team. Mike is a biology major at Penn State University, and he is one of a select few non-professional riders to qualify. Mike is rated as one of the best "Under 23 Espoirs" in the United States. Good luck Michael! 6.1.2004 Student Athletic Trainer Workshop July 27-29, 2004 $40 registration includes three days of instruction, complimentary lunch daily, t-shirt and certificate of attendance. Topics covered include anatomy, protective taping, and injury recognition/management. The presentation is sponsored by East Suburban Sports Medicine and East Suburban Orthopedic Associates. Wednesday April 28th 8:00 PM Center Ice Fitness, Delmont John Bonaroti, PT, ATC will present information on Commotio Cordis, which is the name that describes sudden death as a result of blunt trauma to the chest. There are several chest protectors on the market for young baseball players and information will be shared on options, their use and benefits. Did you know that there are more deaths in youth baseball than in other sports like football and soccer? Robert Waltrip, MD is a specialist in the management of throwing injuries. He has a particular interest in networking with the community to help young athletes and prevent injury. Come and learn about the mechanics of throwing injuries and injury prevention methods. Inside Lacrosse Division II Player of the Week 3.3.2004 Tim Kerin Memorial Scholarship 2003 Award Winner "In dedication toward continued excellence in athletic training" The Tim Kerin Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate athletic training student, and we are very proud to be awarding our 10th scholarship this year. The award honors Tim Kerin who served the University of Pittsburgh as the Head Athletic Trainer from 1973 to 1976 and he was instrumental in developing the curriculum that has produced many fine professionals who proudly represent the University at all levels of athletics and health care. Tim passed away in 1992 at the age of 42. In his memory a scholarship has been established and the recipients are selected on the basis of academic performance, commitment to athletic training, and future aspirations to benefit the National Athletic Trainers Association. These are the qualities that Tim Kerin possessed and lived by. Congratulations to Leigh Weiss, a senior student in the Athletic Training Education Program, for being selected as the tenth recipient of this prestigious award. Leigh, who hails from East Brunswick, NJ, has accepted a two-year graduate assistantship position at Michigan State University. East Suburban Sports Medicine Center established the John H. Lindblad Memorial Award in 1998. This award was created to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Lindblad's contributions to the student athletes of Plum School District. He served as team physician for twenty-five years prior to his passing. He always went above and beyond his duties and unselfishly gave his time because of his love and care for all PHS athletes. This award is given to a Plum High School Senior Student Athlete, who demonstrates the qualities of dedication, teamwork, academic achievement, and an interest in the health professions.
Applications are currently being accepted by Alaina Schuck, ATC at the high school Athletic Training Room. East Suburban Sports Medicine continues to provide the best Athletic Training care for Plum school and community athletes, which we have done for 20 seasons! Good luck to all Plum student athletes for success and health in sports! 1.22.2004 Cycling team sponsors training seminar! East Suburban Sports Medicine is once again the lead sponsor for the ESSM/GPOA Cycling and Triathalon Team which competes at a very high level throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. For the third year in a row, the team is presenting the Pittsburgh Preseason Cycling Clinic on Saturday January 24th at West Penn Hospital beginning at 8:00 AM.
